More School Highlights

Here are just a few picture highlights from our second week of school. We had a great second week of learning. One highlight for me as the teacher was after our second day of science reading. The Apologia series we are using has regular and junior notebooking journals to supplement the study. This year I chose to not use the journals because I didn't want to overwhelm our boys with too much fine motor handwriting activities during their day. Well, after our reading Luke went and grabbed his spiral notebook that he loves to draw in, and started "journaling" what he had learned. When I asked him what he was doing, he responded "I just need to write down what I learned". It was fun to watch his own initiative to journal his learning. Since then, both boys now have "science journals" to draw and write in after our reading.

This week for our Egypt studies we learned more about Pharaohs, pyramids and mummies. To finish off our week we had fun making all the kids into TP mummies! :) They thought this was so much fun, especially the breaking free part. The build up of all things Egypt and how powerful of a civilization they were is the perfect backdrop to learn about God's ultimate glory and sovereignty through His plan for leading the Israelites out of Egypt.

Okay, so this had nothing to do with school, but is just a stinkin' cute picture of Jacob with his "mohawk" courtesy of Daddy. :) He was still napping when we became mummies, so I have to include at least one picture of him!

Usually during our afternoon snack time I read a chapter or two out of our current chapter book. This week we are finishing up a Sonlight suggestion that we loved, Here's a Penny by Carolyn Haywood. This has really been a fantastic read aloud that we have all enjoyed. It even made Mommy tear up a time or two while reading. (There are adoption themes in the story that just hit home!) 



Another Sonlight title we added to our week was Archaeologists Dig for Clues by Kate Duke. This was the perfect addition to our Egypt studies. Although it is not about Egypt, it helped connect for the boys how we have discovered so much about the ancient Egyptian culture through careful study.

Of course after reading the kids had to head outdoors to dig in the backyard looking for ancient treasures! It was fun to watch them dig, sort, sift and identify like true scientists. Luke, Ben and Gracie told me they think they found some "ancient worms"! :)
