First Week of School 2012

Last week we officially started our first week of school for 2012-13! We had a really good week getting used to our new routine and expectations. We can't wait to share our adventures with you! No, we will not be keeping up a weekly post :) but we will try to update as often as possible.  Here are our newest 1st graders!

To celebrate we started out our first morning with a special treat, doughnuts~

Thankfully Jacob has slept in quite a bit this week which has allowed us to get some of our work done including our calendar time and seat work early in the AM. This has allowed for some more play time in the afternoons! Gracie loves to sit with her big brothers for calendar time.

The whole family is already enjoying our studies of ancient Egypt with Tapestry of Grace. When Daddy is not working he helps out with some extra reading time. We found several extra books at our library to supplement our study on Egypt this week.

After learning about various jobs in ancient Egypt, we practiced being scribes. (We like to call this chop-stick hieroglyphics! :))

We also made salt-dough maps of Egypt. These will take a week to dry and harden, then we can paint them next week.

One book we read was about how children lived in Ancient Egypt. We made Egyptian paddle dolls of our own. They were not very cuddly!

We read one of our music appreciation books this week, Meet the Orchestra by Ann Hayes. I think it may have been one of our favorite books this week. After we read about each instrument we have searched for a video on YouTube that showcases that particular instrument. We are hoping this year to get a chance to visit one of the NC Symphony Kids concerts. Here is our absolute favorite video on YouTube that we found. It has made our whole family fall in love with the Cello! :)





We have had a great first week of school. We are learning so much and love to talk Daddy's ear off when he is home telling him about it all. It has been so much fun to make connections between the Egypt we are studying and the Egypt in the Bible where Joseph and Moses lived. Next week we are going to start our science study and are so excited. Have a good week!
