School Update North and South America
So this blog post has been on hold for months! Please forgive this dump of school photos! We have had such a full and busy first several months of school.
We have had a wonderful time "traveling" around the world with our studies this fall. Our studies with MFW Exploring Countries and Cultures includes geography, biomes, animals, culture, foods, and some history. Most importantly we are learning about the people, including any unreached people groups that are still waiting to her about the gospel. Included in our study is several biographies of missionaries. We read about Cameron Townsend while studying North and Central America and Nate Saint while studying South America.
It is amazing just how much the boys have learned in a few short months. We have a geography game which is teaching the locations of all the countries. They both can label every country in North and South America!
We started off our study with a brief review of American geography. With each country we visit we try to incorporate a craft and also a unique recipe!
American Quilt Making
American meal with grilled Hamburgers and Apple Pie!
Each of the kids have "passports" that we use to cross the borders of new countries we study!
Here we have our passport in tow and we are on the plane to Mexico!
We worked on some Spanish lessons on our long flight!
After arriving to each new county, Mommy is the immigration official stamping passports and exchanging US $ for foreign currency!
Then sometimes the kids can spend their new currency on local foods or games. Here Caleb is buying some tortilla chips with pesos!
Mexican Yarn Art
Mexican Feast
Inuit soap carving (Canada)
Maple glazed Salmon for our Canadian meal of course!
And we are off to South America.....Brazil!
Making costumes for our Brazillian Carnival
The kids helped make Brazilian cheese bread called Pao de Queijo, and a national dessert called Brigadeiros.
Gracie said it was like rolling chocolate playdough!
At work one day I met a lovely couple who retired to run an Alpaca farm. They invited our family to visit at any time. It was perfect to visit these Peruvian Alpacas at the end of our South America study.
Such a perfect finish to our study of South America. We all fell in love with these sweet funny creatures!
Every year there is an international festival in our area. This was out first year attending, and it was a huge hit! So many fun things to see and interesting people to meet, not to mention the amazing food!
Here the men at the booth for China were so interactive with the kids! Each of the kids were given a passport and they had to ask questions in a scavenger hunt for answers to get their passport stamped. The Chinese gentlemen wrote all of the kids names in Chinese characters! Very cool.
Pretending to be a part of a Palestinian gathering, of course Jake had to hold the drum since he loves music!
Hands down, the favorite treat of the night was Vietnamese Bubble Tea, although I think that is more of a touristy type drink, not a true local favorite! The kids have already requested that we make bubble tea when we study Vietnam this year!
Traditional cultural dances from many different countries, and even a cultural fashion show!
Isaac, the budding cultural enthusiast, was just ready to get out of his stroller!
Here are some other pictures of day to day school work.
Bible study
Playing with water beads to keep little hands busy!
Math via computer
Science experiment testing which of our senses is more persuasive taste or sight!
Jake is totally taking off in his school work this year. A light bulb and love for learning has been lit!

The men from Nepal were so impressed at Luke and Ben's ability to answer questions about Nepal that they gave them a huge panoramic poster of Mt. Everest!
We tried sample foods from Vietnam, Brazil, Afghanistan, Laos, Greece, and so much more!

Gracie too is doing a wonderful job with her reading, writing, and math for Kindergarten!
This fall we had an opportunity to attend a really fun adoptive family picnic at a local horse ministry farm! We got to meet horses, have a picnic lunch, roast s'mores, and play games. It was a beautiful day, and a huge blessing to meet and interact with other adoptive families.
Another highlight of our fall was a visit from a young man from Italy. One of the universities in this area has a program that introduces willing American families to international students that would like to have dinner with an American family! I grew up with so much exposure to foreign exchange students, missionaries, etc. We want our children to have that healthy exposure to other people around the globe! They adored Alessandro and we had such a nice meal getting to know him!
We also had dinner with a wonderful young lady, Jingwen, from China! Such an amazing opportunity to learn about other cultures, and to share our own!
Whew! It has been a full fall semester! We are already on our way to Europe, with a brief break for a Christmas Around the World study this month.
