This has been a busy month for school as usual. It has been such a mild winter, and we have had several "spring" days this month.....so we have spent A LOT of time doing school outside! We have taken countless nature walks to explore, played in parks, and flew kites with Daddy this month. We got all our regular school work done too.....but spent every extra minute outdoors that we could.
To celebrate Black History Month, we studied several famous African Americans. Luke and Ben loved this month, and have been talking about their favorite Black Americans non-stop. This month we colored worksheets as we read stories about: Harriet Tubman, George Washington Carver, Rosa Parks, Jesse Owens, and Jackie Robinson. We played "Underground Railroad" in our family room with secret codes and stations. We also had an opportunity to visit a Live "Blacks in Wax" Museum presentation at NC State this month. Most of the museum was a little above the boys' heads, but they kept saying how much they enjoyed it. I think they really felt a connection, and were excited to learn about important Americans who share their skin color. Luke's favorites: George Washington Carver (no surprises there since Luke is our little scientist) and Jackie Robinson. Ben's favorite: Jesse Owens. Both boys have been making our living room into a track field, jumping over pillow hurdles and such to pretend to be Jesse Owens. :)
For Christmas the boys both got Leap Tag Reading systems, and Gracie got a leap tag junior. They love those things. For Ben's birthday he got a huge leap tag State Map with all kinds of interesting facts and games. It has been the best school toy to teach US geography. The boys just about have their states memorized and they fill me in on all kids of new things they have learned daily.
We have a favorite trail we like to walk that goes around a lake. Now that I have a vehicle that will hold our double stroller, we are LOVING going on walks together.
We have had a fun, busy month of learning. I keep looking back and am amazed at how far the boys have come this year. They really are doing such a great job. Here is just a quick video of them reading. (And trying to teach Gracie to read! The other day she had a book and she was tracing her finger under the words, left to right and pretending to sound out letters. When I asked her what she was doing she said, "My homework!" I think Luke and Ben will teach her to read by the time she is 3! :)

I love your school updates!!! What fun activities you had planned for Black History month. Have you all watched Disney's American Legends? We just watched it this week and it had some fun history about some early American Legends, like John Henry, Johnny Appleseed and Paul Bunyan. Your boys might really like it!
What a fun post to read/watch! I'm so glad we had a chance to have Luke read to us in person at Christmas...and now to see Ben reading...and Gracie trying...precious! We love you all and admire what you are doing each month in your homeschool!
Wow...your family has grown since we touched base with one another back at Rex in 2010! So fun to read all about your homeschool activities and see the pictures of your beautiful family!
