Week #5

Week five as been another fun week of school in the Morgan household. Over the next few weeks we have added in our belated caterpillar/butterfly study which has kept us busy. We will post more on that later.

After five weeks, we really have gotten a feel for our schedule and curriculum choices. We are so pleased with all of our choices. The boys really seem to be thriving on all aspects of learning. Keeping Jacob and Gracie occupied is always the biggest challenge, but so far so good. One way to keep them busy continues to be playing in the water! Cheapest tot school item ever!

The boys absolutely LOVE working with All About Spelling, part of our language arts curriculum. They also love the manipulative blocks used with our Math-U-See. They beg to do math and spelling now! Gotta love that.

Art lessons continue to be fun as well. This week the boys project was to find a picture in a magazine or calendar to draw from.

Gracie and Jacob love to have their brothers include them in everything. I can't even imagine splitting them up for several hours of the day. We are so thankful for the opportunity to teach them at home for this season.

 This week in Tapestry we turned our focus to the generations after the flood. We learned about Mesopotamia and the early Sumerians. Next we will be learning more about Abraham and his call by God out of Ur. The boys found it so interesting that Abraham was from this new area of the world we are learning about. Finding the connections is such a fun way to learn history and geography woven in with the Biblical accounts. I remember learning these things in school and thinking of them as completely opposite topics to the Bible, never mixing or interacting with one another. The two were so separate in my mind, even now I am learning so much alongside Luke and Ben.

We learned about the ziggurat temples that the Sumerians built. We also read about the Tower of Babel, which most likely was built in the ziggurat design of that time. For a fun craft we made our own ziggurat out of boxes and paint mixed with cornmeal to look like sand.

This is one of the books we read about the Tower of Babel. It was a fun book to read, because it is written in the style of Hebrew, right to left. Luke and Ben thought it was so funny to read a book backwards.


This is another book we use to supplement our studies of the ancient world. With Tapestry it is a book that is scheduled in the upper grammar level (upper elementary) but we love it already!

It is fascinating and jam packed with information and pictures. Even Daddy loves to read this book. I think Luke would carry it around with him and even take it to bed at night if I let him he loves to look at it so much!

 

 This week we are taking a short break from our full school schedule. We will have special visitors all week! More on that later. Have a good week!
