School Week 11-12

We have now completed our first twelve weeks of school! With fall in full swing we have enjoyed some beautiful days outside and our first really chilly days! The kids love raking leaves with Daddy. (Can that be considered PE?)

We have been studying Tchaikovsky and The Nutcracker Ballet for music appreciation. This week we listened to the Spanish chocolate dance while enjoying hot chocolate. This is by far Jacob's absolute favorite part of the week. He loves music. He will sit forever and listen and re-listen to the music. He is absolutely in love with all things music.

Over the past two weeks we have studied ancient marine reptiles. We did an experiment with plaster of paris to determine which sediment is the best medium for fossils (clay, soil, or sand).

We also did an experiment with shells, cheerios and mud to understand why it would have taken a massive flood and mudslide to cause certain marine fossils.

We are always looking for ways to keep little people busy.

Week 12 we started our study of the 50 states! Each week we highlight a few states in the order they joined the USA. The boys have a notebook sheet for each state with the flag, abbreviation, capital, state bird, state flower, and interesting historical facts. We have also checked out several books both fiction and non-fiction related to our states. So far we have studied the first four states: Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Georgia.

We are also participating in a state postcard exchange with some of our Sonlight homeschool friends. We have so much fun checking our mail to see which postcards have arrived every day!

After studying Georgia we made a yummy peach cobbler!

We finished up our study of the American Revolution in conjunction with our state study. We made
aluminum foil Liberty Bells while learning about Pennsylvania.

 

We also made some traditional "Johnny cakes" which all the kids loved!

 

 We started studying color wheels, complementing colors and Claude Monet in art class.

In other exciting news, we have another budding reader in the Morgan house! Gracie read her fist Bob book on her own! In the back of the book I have the names and dates of when her older brothers also read it for the fist time. She had so much fun adding her name to that list.

Gracie has subjected her younger siblings to multiple readings of this story!

We will be using the next few weeks to enjoy some extra holiday celebrations
