School Update Week 9 and 10

With Fall in the air we have done some leaf rubbings. The boys also each picked a tree in our backyard to paint. We will do this activity again for each of the seasons to see how the trees change.

This was a beautiful book which fit in perfectly with our studies.

 

We have now headed full force into the American Revolution! We are taking our time and really enjoying the multitude of books our library has to offer on these subjects! Check out this great stack of books we had for our book basket!

In science we started our next lesson in our Apologia Sea Creatures book. This lesson is covering Sea Turtles and other reptiles and amphibians.

Here Luke and Ben are learning just how difficult it is for the female sea turtles to crawl up to a beach to lay their eggs.

We also measured on our driveway just how big Leatherback turtles are!

Then we enjoyed some driveway bike time! :)

The boys learned that amphibians don't drink water they absorb it through their skin. (Osmosis).  Our experiment had them place vanilla in a sealed balloon in a cardboard box. Then we studied what the box smelled like at increasing intervals.

We also had some time in the kitchen. The kids all helped make breakfast for Daddy one morning.

Then we made "Hasty Pudding." We are studying patriotic American songs. There is a line in Yankee Doodle that says "As thick as hasty pudding." We learned how to make Hasty Pudding and that it got it's name since it could be made "in haste!"

Hasty pudding went over about as well as hardtack!

Probably the highlight of hands on learning was making our own quill pens and berry ink while studying the Declaration of Independence.

I love how much all of the kids absolutely love learning about the American Revolution. This was a conversation heard over the Morgan dinner table this week: Ben: "Who was that Paine guy? Did he help write the Declaration of Independence with Thomas Jefferson?"  Luke: "Oh, you mean Thomas Paine? He wrote Common Sense." Not your typical brother debate for 7 and 8 year olds! :)

Even Caleb loved signing his "John Hancock!"

In art this month we have studied Pablo Picasso, Cubism and Realist v. Abstract art.
