Week 3

My blog post for the third week of school is a bit late, but we have been busy! Here is a quick overview of our third week! 

Gracie has totally taken off in her writing. She loves to write, and practices all day long. She especially loves to practice with her small chalk board for handwriting.

  

This week we had a chance to do several small science experiments as a family.

Here Luke and Ben are trying to lift a newspaper with a ruler to show that air is heavier that assumed.

Another project had us blowing up a small balloon inside of a plastic bottle. The kids then had a chance to step on the bottle imitating what happens when air pressure increases on our lungs in deep water!

We also used cheerios and hair dryers to understand gyres, or surface currents in the ocean.

 

After each activity Luke and Ben carefully note what they have learned in their science notebooks.

 

 

This experiment was to explore which is heavier, cold or warm water.

 

All of the kiddos love getting involved!

 

One night last week we had a cooking demonstration from Saladmaster in our home. The cookware was amazing, but quite a bit out of our budget! However, we chalked the experience up to a fun health lesson for the kids. They were fascinated!

This week we were studying the Jamestown Settlement.

The boys enjoyed several new readers over the last two weeks including:

 

 This week for our fun Friday we decided to have an indoor picnic for lunch!

 

Our youngest artists are busy at work! (Lest you think our schooling always goes according to plan, I can assure you this fingerprinting did not stay where Mommy intended! I was too busy cleaning to catch an after shot picture!)

This week the boys finished up their study of Van Gogh and texture in art. This was a pretty cute picture book for kids about Van Gogh's work that we enjoyed.

Although we have not begun our study of the American Revolution yet, the kids have all enjoyed a series of episodes from the Liberty Kids. I found the entire series of 40 episodes on sale for $5 on Amazon! It has definitely wet their appetites to dive into this area of history. I had to intervene one day when Jacob came to me crying because he "didn't want to be a redcoat!" Apparently, big brothers were making the little brothers be Redcoats in their playtime!

This week we also finished our audio story, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This was a particular favorite for the kids. The kids actually begged me to not go into the pool one day just so we could finish listening to a chapter. Peels of laughter rocked our vehicle as we drove around this week enjoying Mr Wonka and his Oompa Loompas!
