We cut up ten pieces of apples. We chose four different solutions to test with our constant (plain apple), sugar, salt, vinegar and baking soda. Each apple pair had one apple soaked in a solution and then wrapped like a mummy, and one apple just soaked in the solution. We were testing to see which solution preserved the apple the best and answer the question, "Why did the ancient Egyptians dry out the mummies prior to wrapping?"
Of course we had to eat some apples too! Then we waited for a week, very patiently, to see the results!
We also made sand dough hieroglyphics!
Finally, after one week, we were able to check on our apples.
We learned that salt was indeed the best solution to preserve our apples and that it did a much better job preserving before it was wrapped up! We also learned that sugar and baking soda on apples for a week wrapped up smell really, really bad! :)
Continuing with our apple study, we conducted another trial, "What weighs more than an apple?"
We also spent a lot of time soaking up our last days of summer at our pool before it closed.....that counts for PE, right?
We have loved our science experiments every day. Here we are exploring the difference between volume and weight and the ability for items to sink or float.
Here Gracie is keeping up with her science notebook.
