School Catch-up

I have gotten a bit behind in my school posts. Here is a quick catch up from the last few weeks.

Learning about drawing faces and proportion in art class.

Lots of reading to younger siblings!

Plugging along with writing and reading skills

Science experiment with salt in water to understand why oceans don't freeze as easily as fresh water.

The last few weeks we have briefly studied the Mayflower, Pilgrims, and the early Dutch colonist in New Amsterdam. We have made oiled windows and Dutch pancakes, and explored lots of library books! We will study the Pilgrims again for a week long Thanksgiving study in November.

I just absolutely love this picture that Ben drew with his Pilgrim narration. :) Notice the fish that the Indian is throwing into the planting ground! :)

Speaking of fish.....we did a short experiment to see if planting fish with a kernel of corn really does help it to grow. I think this was the first time I have ever purchased sardines in my life, yuck!

We planted one with just the corn. One with snack goldfish for fun. The last one had chopped up sardines.

Daddy helped us out with the sardine part.

We are interested to report that as of right now all three are growing at about the same rate!

In art Luke and Ben have studied Mary Cassatt. They have worked on patterns, silhouettes, and contrasting colors and composition.

Now that the weather has been better we have also spent a lot of time outside. We are soaking up time with nature walks, backyard and park playtime!

Jacob is "reading" his Bible to Isaac. So precious!

We have been studying the names of Jesus with My Father's World Bible lessons. This was one fun craft with Jesus the Light of the World, sun catchers! (Melted crayons in between wax paper and paper plates.)

 

Jacob in particular loved this craft.

 

 

We also learned about Jesus as the Bread of Life. A favorite experiment in this house was with yeast. We had two bottles with warm water and yeast. One bottle had sugar, the other had salt. We placed a balloon over each to see what happens!

The kids wanted me to leave it overnight to see what happens. I decided I did not want to clean up a yeast explosion in the kitchen! Such a simple, but fun visual!

In our Apologia studies, we have studied whales for the past two weeks. We had two short experiments to discover how sound travels and reflects.

The boys had to hypothesize whether the slack or taut string would carry sound better.
