A few birds......but mostly another creature!

This fall we have studied birds in science as mentioned in previous posts. We have had such fun setting up bird feeders and bird baths all over our yard. We have had several birds visit our yard, but lately it has been an invasion of squirrels!!

The birds were never bold enough to visit the feeders attached to our windows.....our other friends have become quite bold, even with little people watching them and banging on the window!

Although it does not match our study, our experiments have turned into which bird feed squirrels prefer! :) (Answer: Both, they are not picky! They have chewed right through our suet net feeders and destroyed another feeder as well!) Oh well, at least the kids love watching them! Even Caleb runs to the window saying his version of squirrel when they show up!

Squirrels are relentless and very acrobatic! Though they are cute with their bushy tails, they devour all the bird seed faster than you can blink an eye! Our only saving grace has been our bird feeding station on a pole. It has a baffle on the pole that they can't scale, and allows us to hang 4 feeders for birds only! The squirrels still get plenty of seed on the ground underneath...win win! You just have to be sure to mount it 10 feet away from anything they can jump from! Good luck and I like the way you are making the best of it with the kids and science!
